Soroptimist International's Ruby Awards (formerly known as Making A Difference
Awards) honor local women who make a difference in their communities.
Honorees at the club level are nominated at the district level, the district
honoree is nominated at regional level, and the regional-level honorees
are nominated at the federation level.
In 1983, Soroptimist International of Oceanside had its first Making A
Difference Luncheon to honor local women who had made a difference in
their communities. Each year In June, women are honored in the following
categories:
- "Woman of Distinction," someone who has
made outstanding achievements through her professional or volunteer
activities relating to at least one of the Soroptimist International
programs of service. 2009 honoree: Dr. Karen Haynes, President,
Cal State University, San Marcos.
- "Woman Helping Women," someone who has
effectively used her resources, talents and influence to help other
women achieve their potential. 2009 honoree: Deborah Lindholm,
Founder & CEO, Foundation for Women.
- "Organization Advancing the Status of Women & Children,"
a business or organization that has used its position to promote recognition
of women's and children's issues. 2009 honoree: San Diego Habitat
for Humanity, Elizabeth Neubrand, Director of Development & Community
Affairs.
The winner of the Nordstrom opportunity drawing at the 2009 luncheon
was Julie Mansur.
